Starting date - March 6, 2006

 Location - Chaparhar, Nangarhar Province

The Chaparhar Commercial Tree Project is the result of a tremendous response from the villagers following the The Dago Village Bakery Woodlot Project. IFHope will implement a combined woodlot and construction pole project of 30 acres of saplings planted on private land.

From 30-50 participating farmer landowners will be selected to plant .5 to 1.5 acres of Eucalyptus for firewood or poplars for construction poles. A rotating harvest system will provide a sustainable supply of product as well as a steady income for the farmers. One fourth of each planting will be harvested each year beginning after the third year.

IFHope will conduct a site survey, provide eucalyptus and poplar saplings from its nursery stock, assist local farmers in design and planting, arrange for the purchase and delivery of fertilizer and other inputs and provide training in woodlot management.

This project will result in the following benefits:

• The participating farmers averaging 1.5 jeribs of woodlot would earn a sustainable annual income stream $1,800 per year from a woodlot and $3,000 per year from poplar poles.

• The combined benefit to the villagers from the 15 acres of woodlot is valued at over $35,000.

This estimated financial benefit is dependent on proper care and maintenance of the tree plantations, actual production and factors influencing it, as well as market prices. The estimated benefit should be viewed as providing a general sense of the potential value of this project.
