DAI Woodlot Project

Partner -  DAI, Alternative Livelihoods Program

Project Dates - 1 April 2005 - 28 February 2006

Location - Nangarhar Province

Two hectares (10 jeribs) of woodlot were planted on private land in each of five districts.  From five to seven participating farmer/landowners were selected  (30 total) to plant from one to three jeribs of woodlot. A rotating harvest system will be established to provide a sustainable supply of product as well as a sustainable income for the farmers.

One fourth of each woodlot will be harvested each year beginning after the third year.  The proceeds from harvest will be kept by the farmer/landowner as a return to land and management and provide an income of over ten times that of wheat.  Realization of a projected sustainable return of over $6,000 per hectare ($60,000 total) starting at the end of year three spread over 30 farmers in the district.
