CNFA Orchard Project

Partner - (Citizens Network for Foreign Affairs) CNFA /AADP-Afghanistan

Project Dates - November 2003 - March 2006

Location - Nangarhar Provence

This project is designed to jumpstart horticulture development by helping farmers establish commercial fruit and nut orchards.

These orchards will fill market shortages, provide income for some 135 farm workers annually, bring in a minimum net farm income of $482,000 annually, and serve as models for other farmers to showcase the benefits of fruit production as a profitable alternative to illicit crops.  Vegetable intercrops are planted with seed donated by IFHope to enable the farmers to earn an income while the trees are developing

Key points of the project are the establishment of 200 hectares of commercial orchards, the recruitment of 150 entrepreneurial farmers who were willing to finance a portion of the necessary investment and carry it through the four to five year orchard establishment period before profitable production begins and the realization of a projected minimal annual net income of $3,000 per hectare after orchard maturation, for a total of $600,000 annually in Nangarhar, based on business plans provided to farmers from CNFA via IFHope.
